Its a interesting design this.

For one it still used precombustion chambers (This engine was made in the 1960s and 1970s) when most large Diesel engines had long adopted direct injection, giving it the characteristic old-school clatter and thus the “Clatterpillar” nickname. On the other hand the engine had a DOHC cylinder head which is rather rare even today. It was also not a completely new engine, the basic design is derived from the earlier D343 industrial engine . Power outputs of up to 425hp on the other hand are impressive even by modern standards.

Our 3400 series were still using PC well into the mid 70's. I hated running them as they were noisy and were prone to melting holes in pistons if you didnt let them gradually warm up before putting a load on then at high idle.

PC does n’t like Turbocharging very much as they run hotter than DI, especially without inter cooling .

that was funny how that engine progressed. IIRC it was turned into (or replaced by) the pushrod 3406A/B/C:

then in the ‘90s when it was redesigned into the 3406E (later C-15) it went back to overhead cam:

probably one of the three most legendary trucking engines, alongside the Cummins N-series and Detroit Diesel 71.

As a european, I am obliged to counter with this:

Kinja'd!!!

Really the only truly iconic european Truck engine, but that is due to how our truck manufacturers work completely differently  to american ones.

That’s a 3400 pound engine. The engine weighs more than most average cars.

Not so much anymore; Cummins is really the only independent engine manufacturer anymore. PACCAR (Kenworth/Peterbilt) has their own engine family courtesy their interest in DAF, International has theirs courtesy their interest in MAN, Detroit Diesel is pretty much exclusive to Daimler, etc.
